Welcome to the Safety
Intelligence Programme

Safety Intelligence (SQ) is here to make safer outcomes achievable for everyone - across teams, organisations and industries.

The SQ Programme has been developed in line with established research. This shows us that in order to truly influence safety culture and improve safety, four core components must be addressed: the environment (the physical aspects of the workplace), the practices (policies, procedures, training etc), and the person (attitudes, skills, experience etc) - all guided by leadership (the way leaders influence and guide safety culture).

SQ is made up of three kinds of intelligence

Intellectual – making sure everything makes sense and avoids confusion.

Emotional – empathising with others and responding with care.

Cultural – acting in the spirit of kaitiakitanga, guardianship.

The Recipe to
Safety Citizenship

The SQ recipe is here to help organisations implement their own versions of the SQ Programme by aligning strategy, focusing on what matters most, and equipping people with the capability to achieve Safety Citizenship.

Steps to achieving
Safety Citizenship

StrategyWhatHow = Safety Citizenship

Safety Citizenship is achieved when safety within our organisation is fundamental to each role and a collective obligation. We are committed to continuous improvement and learning, pursuing growth by understanding and addressing our previous shortcomings.

Counter productive

The company doesn't care much about me or my safety, so I don't care much about anything besides looking out for myself and getting the job done.

Fails to follow the rules or regulations; sabotages and engages in deliberate unsafe acts.

Public compliance

Most of the time safety procedures are a burden to getting the job done. But, I need to make sure I'm following them when management is looking.

Tick and Flick approach to safety. Only doing the right thing when the boss is looking.

Private compliance

Safety rules and procedures are there to protect me. It is my responsibility to follow them so that I can stay safe for the things that matter to me.

I rely on sticking to the rules when doing my job to stay safe.

Compliance with systems based on personal choice to stay safe; uses systems, processes and equipment as they are designed.

Collaborative

In part, my safety depends on my teammates. To stay safe as a team, we need to work together and look out for one another.

I rely on my decisions, actions and my teammates to keep my job safe.

Pulls up teammates for unsafe behaviours; works together to control risks and has safety conversations.

Citizenship

The company's safety is a core part of everyone's job and shared responsibility. We strive to improve ourselves and learn.

I rely on myself and the whole company working together to make my job safer.

Looks for opportunities to improve safety; shares learning from incidents and errors with others.

Everyone Has a role to Play

Putting it into action

Safety isn't just the responsibility of a few. It's up to all of us. From leaders to contractors to team members, every decision, action and conversation helps build a safer Aotearoa. When we all take responsibility, we lift the standard of safety together.
